Chivu: “We showed that we can dig deep”

“We became a little anxious,” said Cristian Chivu, Inter's head coach. He put that down to the two European defeats that came before it. “We showed that we can dig deep,” he said of the second.

He called the win hugely important, and said his three substitutions in the 59th minute brought fresh energy. He also backed his goalkeepers: he has “complete faith” in all of them.

Josep Martinez made three important saves: a header in the first half, then a shot and the follow-up header in the 88th minute. “Winning like this with ten men means so much,” the goalkeeper said.

Manuel Akanji, the defender, was less happy with the officials. “I don't understand how the referee could have shown two yellow cards,” he said. Nicolò Barella, the midfielder who wore the armband, said what mattered was winning, no matter how.

Inter's under-20s beat Shakhtar 2–0 for a first Youth League win

Five hours before kickoff, Inter's under-20 side beat Shakhtar 2–0 in the UEFA Youth League. Alen Vukaj scored in first-half stoppage time and Christian Carrara in the 75th minute. It was a first league-phase win for Emiliano Bigica's team.
