Chivu takes the blame as Shakhtar arrive at San Siro

Nerazzurri Daily Edition No. 50, Wednesday, October 21, 2026 — Chivu takes the blame as Shakhtar arrive at San Siro

Cristian Chivu, Inter’s head coach, turned the blame on himself on the eve of Shakhtar Donetsk’s visit to San Siro. He said he has to improve how he communicates and prepares, and that he never points the finger at his players. Inter are 29th of 36 teams in the Champions League with no points. They lost 2–1 at Real Madrid and 4–3 at home to Club Brugge; Shakhtar are 11th with four. Kickoff is 3:00 PM ET.

Chivu puts it on himself: “I never point the finger at my players”

Chivu spoke at Appiano Gentile, Inter’s training ground, on Tuesday afternoon. He said he is the one chiefly responsible for where Inter are, and that he may not be communicating what the team needs. “I never point the finger at my players,” he said.

He wants the squad ready “mentally, physically and tactically,” he said. He also said the club has never claimed it must win the Champions League, only that it is a dream. The aim for Wednesday was simpler: “We have to be ourselves: we want to win tomorrow.”

Bastoni: a result today, or the top eight gets very hard

Alessandro Bastoni, the center-back, sat beside Chivu on Tuesday and set out the stakes. “We need a result tomorrow; otherwise, finishing in the top eight will become extremely difficult,” he said, while repeating that the club has never called the Champions League a target.

On the slow starts he asked for honesty. “Each of us needs to be honest with ourselves and take individual responsibility,” he said. He suggested the team does not spot danger early enough.

Seven European meetings with Shakhtar, one goal conceded

The clubs have met seven times in Europe since 2005. Inter have won three and drawn four, scoring ten and conceding one. That goal was Elano’s equalizer at a closed San Siro in the 2005 qualifiers, in a tie Inter still came through.

Josep Martinez stays in goal, both papers now say

What has changed since yesterday is the goalkeeper. Corriere dello Sport reports that Josep Martinez keeps the place, so there is no switch to Ivan Provedel, whose Inter debut waits again. Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy’s biggest sports daily, has it the same way.

Corriere dello Sport also has Carlos Augusto resting Dimarco, Diouf back on the right, Hakan Calhanoglu running midfield, and Marcus Thuram and Ange-Yoan Bonny up front.

Gazzetta has Bastoni in the middle of a back three, as a trial

Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Chivu is weighing Bastoni as the central defender of a back three. Akanji would be to his right and Carlos Augusto on the left, with Bisseck left out and Dimarco kept as the left wing-back. The paper calls it a trial, not a change Inter will keep.
