Sandro Mazzola has died, aged 83

Sandro Mazzola died in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was 83. Inter announced it themselves. The statement names president Giuseppe Marotta, vice-president Javier Zanetti and head coach Cristian Chivu among those who "mourn with profound sorrow the passing of Sandro Mazzola." No cause was given.

Seventeen seasons, 1960 to 1977: 565 official appearances, 158 goals, four league titles, two European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups. He was Serie A's top scorer in 1965 and second in the 1971 Ballon d'Or.

Flags are at half mast at the Italian federation's headquarters and at Coverciano, its technical center. A minute's silence will be held at every sporting event in Italy this weekend.

The club names Stones's injury

John Stones, the defender signed this summer, had tests on Friday at the Istituto Humanitas in Rozzano. "The tests revealed a muscle strain to the flexor muscles in his left thigh," the club wrote. "His condition will be reassessed over the coming days." No return date was set.
