Inter open the Champions League on Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabéu — the stadium where they beat Bayern Munich to win the 2010 final, and where the home dugout now belongs to José Mourinho, the coach who led them that night. Chivu speaks there today at 1:00 PM ET (19:00 CEST), and the call on Federico Dimarco's left knee is due the same day. The women got their business done first: 3-1 against Lazio on Sunday, and a place in the Women's Cup semifinals.

Real Madrid appointed José Mourinho as first-team head coach on June 11, 2026, on a contract to June 30, 2029. The club's statement records the decision of a board meeting chaired by Florentino Pérez, with Mourinho starting when preseason began on July 13.

The Bernabéu is also where Mourinho's Inter finished the 2010 treble. Inter beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Champions League final there on May 22, 2010, Diego Milito scoring both goals, and Mourinho left for Real Madrid within days, unveiled at the club on May 31 that year. The Serie A title and the Coppa Italia had come first that season.

The 2010 detail comes from The National's account of that final. Neither club has tied the reunion to Tuesday in anything it has published.

Inter open the Champions League league phase away to Real Madrid on Tuesday, September 8, kicking off at 3:00 PM ET (21:00 CEST) at the Santiago Bernabéu. They travel with three Serie A wins from three.

The club has published the schedule for today: Inter train at Appiano Gentile at 5:30 AM ET (11:30 CEST), and the official Inter press conference is at the Bernabéu at 1:00 PM ET (19:00 CEST). Real Madrid train at 4:30 AM ET (10:30 CEST) and speak at 6:30 AM ET (12:30 CEST).

Inter have published no squad list for the trip, have not said who sits alongside Chivu at that press conference, and have given no team news. Club Brugge at home on October 13 is next in the league phase.

Sky Sport Italia puts Federico Dimarco's injury at a “lieve distorsione al ginocchio sinistro” — a mild sprain of the left knee — picked up against Napoli, with Carlos Augusto replacing him in the 62nd minute.

On whether he travels, Sky's line is that “la sensazione è che il giocatore potrebbe partire per Madrid e sarà poi Chivu a valutarne l'utilizzo” — the feeling is that the player could leave for Madrid, and it will then be for Chivu to judge how to use him. Sportmediaset, reporting the same tests, puts the decision on Monday and says Inter will not gamble.

The club has published nothing on Dimarco's knee. The diagnosis and the timeline are the papers' reporting until Inter say otherwise.

TUTTOmercatoWEB, carried by L'Interista, expects a 3-5-2: Josep Martínez in goal; Yann Bisseck, John Stones and Alessandro Bastoni across the back; Andy Diouf, Nicolò Barella, Hakan Calhanoglu, Curtis Jones and Dimarco in midfield; Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram together in attack.

It has Jones in line for a first start and Thuram back beside Lautaro from the beginning, calls Diouf and Luis Henrique a straight choice on the right, and still names Dimarco despite the knee.

A probable lineup is a newspaper's guess. Inter have published no lineup and will not until about an hour before kickoff.

FCInterNews reports that Lautaro Martínez, Hakan Calhanoglu and Yann Bisseck were at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday, photographed in front of the starting grid. Lautaro was there with his wife, Agustina Gandolfo.

It was the day after Napoli, and two days before Madrid.

Inter went behind at the Arena Civica Gianni Brera to a Monnecchi strike from distance in the 16th minute, then turned the match around. Vilhjálmsdóttir scored from the penalty spot in the 40th, Tomašević put Inter ahead in the 53rd, and Raphino finished it in the 96th.

That is three wins from three in Group A. Inter take first place and go through to the semifinals, and the club says the opponent is drawn on Monday.

David Sassarini afterwards: “Si chiude una settimana fantastica, questa gara poteva rappresentare una trappola perché avevamo speso tantissime energie contro il Wolfsburg” — a fantastic week ends here; this match could have been a trap, because we had spent so much energy against Wolfsburg. On what comes next: “Ora arriviamo al sorteggio pensando che vogliamo raggiungere la finale di questa competizione” — we come to the draw thinking we want to reach the final of this competition.
